Millions of Americans got sick during last year’s flu season. Experts aren’t expecting this year to be any better. Three new viral strains of influenza are expected to circulate around the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has some tips on how to protect yourself. ![]() 1) Get a shot. The CDC says “the single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated.” CDC guidelines call for babies 6 months and older up to age 19 to get a flu shot. It is also recommended for adults 50 and older, pregnant women, those with chronic illnesses and caregivers. 2) Cover your mouth. Practicing good hygiene is essential to staying healthy. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Wash your hands often to protect yourself from germs. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. 3) Sick day. Stay home from work, school and errands if you’re sick. If you don’t feel good keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. 4) See a doctor. If you do get sick check with your doctor. Influenza anti-viral drugs are available through prescription and may be used to treat the flu or prevent infection with flu viruses.
