As Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike roars toward the U.S. Coast, residents there are preparing for what could be extremely dangerous storms. Here’s how to protect yourself.

1) Protect yourself
Go get money now from an ATM –you don’t know if the electricity will be wiped out and you don’t want to be left with an empty wallet. Top off your gas tank. Get a camera and go through your rooms now. Then put that camera along with important documents like your birth certificate or wedding photos in a gallon-size zip lock bag. Don’t forget to include other important paperwork like your bank contact information, bonds, vehicle registration, your insurance policies, your passport, and your health and immunization records. Then put it by the door so you can grab it in a hurry. Restock your emergency supply kit—make sure the supplies are in a waterproof container. Of course, you should have at least a gallon of water onhand.

2) Get flood insurance
For folks in a hurricane’s path, it’s too late for flood insurance. There is a waiting period of 30 days before any policy takes effect. But it’s a good time to buy flood insurance so that they’re protected next time. Flood insurance can be bought through the federal government—for more information go to floodsmart.gov. You can also buy the government’s policy through your insurance company.
