I like the idea of buying organic food.  It is grown without pesticides or fertilizers and is full of nutrients.  Lately, I’ve noticed that some of my favorite organic products are way too pricey.  A bag of organic cherries was $7.99.  A small container of strawberries cost $4.99.  Registered dietitian Cynthia Sass, the nutrition director at Prevention magazine has some tips for buying organic food on a low cost budget.

1) Buy in season and freeze it. Look for organic produce that is plentiful this time of year. You are more likely to get a price break. Buy extra quanities and store in the freezer so you can have it throughout the year.

2) Look for store brands. Most of the big supermarket chains now carry their own brand of less expensive organic products.

3) Join a price club. Costco, B.J.’s, Sam’s Club and other price clubs carry organic products.

4) Buy in bulk. If you have the storage space, consider buying larger quantities of organic food. For instance, grains can be a real bargain if you buy in bulk.
Finally, go on line to store websites to look for coupons. Make a grocery list and look for the sales.
