June 6, 2008 Staying safe around the backyard poolPosted: 09:12 AM ET
On a hot summer day, there is nothing that I like more than jumping into a swimming pool to cool off. I was surprised to learn from the Centers for Disease Control that, on average, 10 people drown in the United States every day. Many of the accidents happen right in our own backyards. The American Red Cross offers some basic tips that can keep you safe in or around the water. ![]() 1) All eyes on little ones. Never leave a child unobserved around water. Adult supervision is recommended. 2) Lock it up. Enclose a home pool completely with a self-locking, self-closing fence with vertical bars. 3) Pool phone. Install a phone by the pool or keep a cordless phone nearby so you can call for emergency help. 4) Put away toys. Keep toys away from the pool when it is not in use. They can attract children to the water. 5) Cover up or uncover. Pool covers should always be completely removed prior to pool use so no one gets trapped underneath. Finally, the best way to stay safe in and around the water is to make sure all adults and children learn how to swim.
